Q Candace, I have been reading about a new method of eyebrow shaping called “threading” I currently tweeze my eyebrows and have had them waxed in the past. What method do you think produces the best results?
A. This is a question that basically depends on your personal preference and budget. Eye Brows can become the signature of your look; something distinctly unique about you. Temporary removal of hair unless you have professional electrolysis, will always grow back but the for best results maintenance is not an option!
Tweezing is the most popular brow shaping technique; it can be done at home which makes it convenient and inexpensive. If you choose this route, you should purchase quality tweezers. Quality tools make a difference in time and performance. Tweezing can be a slightly painful processes so consider numbing your skin first. Upkeep is more often and will have need to be repeated again every 3-5 days
Waxing can provide longer lasting results and home kits are available, but I would recommend that you have it professionally done. There ae various forms of wax to choose from. Some wax hardens and can be pulled off, while others require strips to aid in removal. Wax also comes in various formulas including one for sensitive skin.
Having your eyebrows waxed can provide longer lasting effects from 2-8 weeks depending on the hair growth. Professional waxing at most salons can run anywhere from $10-50 per session.
Depilatory creams can be used but they are messy, smelly and harder to control so there is a higher chance of mishaps. They contain harsh chemicals that when applied dissolves the hair just below the skin’s surface. This technique may cause pain if you have sensitive skin.
Last but not least is eyebrow threading. It has become the new rage in hair removal. Threading is a technique that involves a thread, which is twisted along the eyebrow to remove unwanted hair. It’s fast, precise, and relatively painless. Threading can single out one hair if needed or can pull an entire row of hair from the follicle to achieve a more refined line. This definitely has to be done by a professional and although this is a rapidly growing technique, few salons offer this service.
Depending on which technique you choose, stick to your natural eyebrow shape. Remove only the hair that is not in the natural line of your brow. Total removal and penciling brows in looks fake and unnatural.
There are plenty of products that provide eyebrow templates to use for guideance and brow shaping powders, pencils or gels can be used to fill in thinner areas where needed.
If you prefer to do it yourself I suggest you start with a visit to a professional first, and then maintain the shape on your own at home. Whether you decide to do it on your own or visit a salon regularly brow upkeep fairly inexpensive but will give your look amazing results.
